Be a Side Walker

Side walkers walk beside the horse to help stabilize and secure the rider. This is an added precaution we take during our riding lessons. You do not need any experience to volunteer as a side walker. We only require that you are physically fit and at least 14 years old.

We have a horse leader, and two side walkers on each side of the horse. Each volunteer plays an important role in keeping our riders safe.

be a horse leader

Horse leaders lead the horses our children ride during our classes. In order to be a horse leader, we require extensive horse experience and side walking experience. You must also be physically fit and at least 14 years old. If you meet this requirement, we will train you how to lead a horse in our program.

Details:

We have new volunteer orientation before the season begins in April.

Come to the barn any Monday (1:15 PM – 8:30 PM) or Thursday (3:30 PM – 9:00 PM) and ask for one of the board members or instructors on site to help you get started. If you are between the ages of 14 and 18, you will need a parent or guardian to sign the legally-required paperwork. All new/returning volunteers will be required to complete criminal and child-abuse background checks. This is a Pennsylvania state law. Fees are waived for volunteers. Get started at
http://www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis/public/home and https://epatch.state.pa.us

Come dressed comfortably for the weather, with suitable shoes or boots (NO SANDALS — these are horses, remember!). Volunteers may park in the lower lot and walk up the hill to the far barn and arena.

If you have any question about the weather conditions (hot, humid, stormy etc.), please call 724-443-4485 or 412-366-2220 after 10:00 AM. There will be a message if we are cancelled that day. You also can check our Facebook page or our Calendar page.

If you have any questions pertaining to volunteering, please use the Contact Info Page, or call T.M. Abbott, Program Director, at 724-443-4485.
